Confused about phthalate plasticisers? You are not alone! In recent months there has been a barrage of information and much debate on the subject which has resulted in conflicting views and clouded the issues surrounding the use of these chemicals in PVC compounds.

To clarify the situation and address current concerns on the use of phthalates Dr Jeff Ryan, Technical Director of Dugdale Ltd, the rigid and flexible PVC compounds manufacturer, has produced a document that answers the questions most frequently asked by processors. His white paper, ‘Phthalates – Questions and Answers’, explains what phthalates are, where they are used and discusses why users are apprehensive about them. It makes clear that phthalates are not banned and can be used in certain applications - at the moment.  Questions raised by current European Directives, including REACH, are also aired and answers cover the cost and efficiency issues raised by using phthalate-free and alternative plasticisers.
